Cranes will fly
I've been making paper crane sculptures and I must have really hit on something. In fact, every one of them has sold on (or before) it's first public showing! As great of news as that is, what really floors me are my most recent two, which have migrated to a permanent nesting ground at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum. 'Flow' was acquired by purchase award at the Western Spirit Art Show, for the contemporary art collection of the museum. 'Solitude' joined it's flockmate when the benefactors of the award donated it to the museum directly. (Cranes are never completely solitary, after all!) A little birdie tells me that the Summer Art Market is happening this weekend in Denver. Oh, and there just *might* be a new crane sculpture there. |
New Works, and Awards! |
Flow 12" x 9 1/2"
|
||
To me, this crane feels like it is moving in slow motion, part-stretch, part-dance. This piece won the Contemporary Museum Purchase Award at the Western Spirit Art Show and Sale, and will be on exhibit (along with 'Solitude') in the museum's permanent art collection. |

Solitude 10 1/2" x 9 1/2" |
A crane is never truly alone, always connected to their flock and mate. Still, moments of peace and quiet reflection can be had if one looks for them within one's self. |
Sound of Water 18" x 14" |
||
A tranquil garden scene - a dry river bed of rounded stones, a metal dragonfly ornament, and the burbling music of water fountains - a backyard sanctuary. There are a lot of great events in this newsletter, but if you follow it to the end you will also see a list of demos and workshops. This piece is one I started last year working in plein air at the Park Hill Garden Walk. I'll be there again this year. It's always beautiful and relaxed event, it's well worth taking a day off to visit! |

So I've been having a lot of fun lately with a new subscription art supply service called Sketchbox. The beauty of it is you never know what will come in the mail! I'm really enjoying challenging myself with new materials, and giving myself regular time to sketch and play. Some ideas are coming out that I never expected! This guy is a little hermit hummingbird from Trinidad and Tobago - painted with watercolor pencils, red brush pen, and micron on yupo paper. I'm planning something special with it; follow me on Instagram to find out! |
