Well Hello Again... |
It's been a while... er... a few years, I know. I'm supposed to have some kind of heartfelt intro here, or at least that's the norm I've tried to create with these newsletters, but what can I say? We all know what's happened in the world the past few, and at this point, it's old news. I went underground, but I didn't stop creating, no not at all! I have a lot to share with you, but for now I'll keep it simple and share what's coming up in the future. There is a PACKED schedule of events this year, starting with my return to the Governor's Art Show in Loveland. This is one of Colorado's finest, and I created a new sculpture for it which is my biggest (by width) yet. I'll be at the Loveland Museum tomorrow, Saturday the 27th for an Artist Meet and Greet for the show. Stop by and say hi this weekend, check out my other events this June, or just send me an email, and let's catch up! |
New Works |
Flight 50" x 20" |
After several years of creating smaller works, I wanted to do something big and spectacular for my return to the Governor's Art Show. This piece had been bopping around in my head for several years, with themes of stone and flesh, pattern, air, and gravity. I typically have the finished work in my head at the start, but this sculpture changed quite a bit as I thumbnailed gestures and compositions, so much so that it's a completely different piece and required a different name from my original plan. A new point of view and time of day deliver the feelings I wanted to state with much more impact and add some of my current inspirations into the work. |

Dark Winter Waters 8" x 8" 2022 was the Year of the Water Tiger, with the color black associated with the element water. This sculpture was created for the Chinese New Year's Invitational at Valkarie Gallery. After a little research, I found that the direction North, and therefore winter, is also associated with the water element. And so came the concept for this sculpture: A cold winter's night, perfectly silent; a tiger sliding smoothly through waters chilled to the verge of icing, and so still that they reflect the sky and forest with mirror clarity. The stars are mica flakes embedded in the paper, and they reflect real light. This piece has many moods in person. It has sold, but the original hangs at the Governor's Art Show and can be viewed until the show's end on June 11th. |

Black Water Rabbit 8" x 8"
|
|
|
Also created for Valkarie Gallery's Chinese New Year Invitational - 2023 is the Year of the Black Water Rabbit. So how could I resist creating a California black sea hare? Aplysia vaccaria is the largest member of the group of seaslugs known as sea hares, the biggest individuals coming in at over 3 feet and a massive 30 pounds. The gentle giants are vegetarians, and they eat brown algae, which gives them their dark coloration. Despite being large and squishy, and the only sea hare without defensive ink, the black sea hare has no known predators. It's thought to derive toxins from its diet. |
